After so many years of living in the same house, you don't tend to get many garden firsts. But yesterday we did. We've had Gt. Spots around the house on and off over the years, some as obvious residents, but never so far a juvenile. I was just remarking on this yesterday morning when the male of our current pair was drinking from the highly valuable "bird bath" on its no doubt venerable antique plinth when suddenly ... ..... a juvenile Gt. Spot flew in and landed by its side.. woo ! And talking of Jackdaws, which I wasn't, we generally get about 30 or so arriving each morning, and leaving in the evening. But a few days ago, as dusk was dusking, about 120 of the medium-sized blighters could be seen circling and recircling repeatedly over the street . This continued for about 40 minutes to a greater ( or lesser) extent until the whole lot landed en masse into a dead tree and stayed there. I assume that this was a prequel to going to a more sheltered tree once we weren't looking. So that was all v. interesting. In the distant past, we used to get a WOJAR over the house. I think I've written about it .... maybe. Anyhow, it was a massive Wave Of Jackdaws And Rooks. Often several thousands of them. They would whoosh over us just post-dawn in a Northerly direction ... ... and continue to who-knows-where. But they dwindled and dwindled ..... why ? did they go somewhere else ? And anyway, there's hardly any rooks at all at all round here now. Well, it keeps us local birders busy I suppose. We'd be a bit stuffed if nothing ever changed.....
