Way way back ( post#453, 4th April) I was writing about bird-song records ( it was National Vinyl Day or something)(well, the day after actually) and having written about it I couldn't find any of my admittedly small collection of such things. Not one ! Bah ! But this morning, I found this magnificent CD behind a load of books. Yo ! Just look at all the birds on the CD ..... crumbs !! ..... and ,as usual, I apologise for the overlap ... Not only that .... there's a whole load of descriptions of what's on each track , and locations, and dates. You even get to find out the birds in the background ... that's quality that is ! Here's a small selection to show you what I mean ... So .... a gap has been filled, and filled with a cracker of a CD, and I can only wonder where all the other blasted things are. I've got one smashing vinyl thingy with some posh person with an incredibly plummy voice sergeant-majorishly barking out the English and Latin names before each bird comes on ... I hope I will find that one . Good value ... memorable ! " YELLOWHAMMER EMbehRR-AYE-ZAAH CitreenELLA" Yes, that's really how he does it. Worth 17/6 any day. All that singing and calling ... it's like a marching band signalling power and territory and the like ... ho yes. They even wear big tall hats to make them look bigger ! Birds, of course, have crests instead. Anthemic or what ? I know you all want to sing along with it. That's cathartic that is. There ought to be a Cathartic Tern ... and a Cathartic Warbler. Hey ... Cathartic Redpoll !! The list goes on .... as does this "verse" ... Some birds have a crest To look their best Like soldiers have hats And we know that that's A clever trick, to make us fear Their fighting skills with sword and spear They look much bigger than they really are Like the spikes on a helmet and the wings on a car Throughout evolutionary history It's worked for them, and it works for me ! But just a mo ! That showy bluff Could lead to fisticuffs and stuff And that would be an awful shame So maybe there's a different game ? No! that's a load of softy crap What we like is a bloody scrap - Actually and metaphorically And, of course, cathartically, And very evolutionary.
