For her end-of-course dissertation, Daisy had surveyed the birds in three circular plots in a coniferous woodland. They were like this ... and seeing as she had the time, she surveyed that bit in the middle as well. Three identical circular survey areas, each with a radius of 1km. A few days after handing it in, her tutor asked her to come in so he could ask her a few questions, suggest a few things etc. And one of the obvious things he asked her was, why had she also surveyed the birds in the bit in the middle as well ? Well, why not ? ...was her reply And then he asked, why haven't you worked out the area of it ... it's only of limited use without it. So Daisy, being a bit of a whizz at maths, said she would work it out and include it in the 2nd draught. And sure enough, she did. And all manner of things were well. But ... can you do it, dear reader ? If Daisy did, of course you can. Well, you can always rely on TMBG for this sort of thing ... so here it is ...
